Andrew Simpson out campaigning with new Deputy Mayor, Sally Beardsworth
Sally Beardsworth, Lib Dem Councillor for Kingsthorpe, has been elected as Deputy Mayor for Northampton following this week's Annual Council Meeting. Sally's nomination was proposed by Andrew Simpson at the meeting where he spoke of her valued contribution to local government both in her ward of Kingsthorpe and the wider community.
Andrew said " I am pleased to propose friend and colleague Sally Beardsworth for the position of Deputy Mayor. It is Sally's personal approach to politics that I think highlights where Sally comes from - she often says she is not 'political' in the sense of making big points about political policy she is more driven about fairness and what is right and making sure people are heard."
Sally becomes only the second Liberal Democrat to be Deputy Mayor in the last 50 years - the other being Richard Church in 1998. Although the party has been the official opposition on the Council since 1995 only one Lib Dem has been Mayor in that period. Next year Sally will hopefully become the town's second Lib Dem Mayor in recent history.
