Liberal Democrat Councillors and campaigners were out on the streets this Saturday collecting petitions to stop the proposed closure of 7 Post Offices in the town. They spent Saturday morning outside threatened Post Offices at Boothville, Broadmead Avenue and at the Brookside Centre.
"People are very angry when they find out their local Post Office is earmarked for closure" said Andrew Simpson, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Northampton North constituency. "Nearly every person we spoke to signed the petition and often they also expressed their dismay and disbelief as to why their local office was closing".
Local Liberal Democrats will be collecting signatures in the run up to the end of the consultation period - they have also started to deliver over 6,000 addressed petitions to areas affected in the town.
"When out collecting signatures it really strikes you how many different people use the post office - both young and old - it is a real community facility and to be loosing it is scandalous" said Cllr David Garlick, Lib Dem Headlands ward.
