Liberal Democrat Party President Simon Hughes MP addressed Saturday's gathering of Liberal Democrats across the East Midlands at Sixfields in Northampton referring to the Obama campaign as providing 'inspiration for the future of politics in Britain'.
Simon Hughes said: "Barack Obama's campaign has reached out to millions of Americans disenchanted with politics and politicians. As Liberal Democrats we take a grassroots approach to politics. Barack Obama's campaign has shown the way in increasing political engagement and voter turnout and he is an inspiration to us all!"
The Conference saw party members from across the East Midlands gather to listen to debates, take part in workshops and training and hear from MPs and party experts. Lib Dem MP for Chesterfield Paul Holmes spoke to members as well as the National Party's Campaigns Director Hillary Stevenson.
Cllr Andrew Simpson, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Northampton North, who opened the conference said:
"Here in Northampton we have made major progress in turning round a poor Council. The important part of that is making sure we 'keep it real' by involving people in that change. That's why I and others will be door knocking and talking to residents across the town in the coming months."
