Lib Dems Top the Poll in Northampton North

June 6, 2009 8:00 PM

The result of Thursday's County Council Elections saw the total vote for the Lib Dems across Northampton North constituency beat both Labour and the Conservatives.

The vote share for all 10 County Council divisions across the constituency was:

Lib Dem - 7,856 votes (35.4%)

Con - 7,025 votes (31.6%)

Lab - 4,170 votes (18.8%)

Green - 864 votes (3.9%)

BNP - 631 votes (2.8%)

Eng Dem - 612 votes (2.8%)

Others - 1,049 votes (4.7%)

Andrew Simpson, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Northampton North constituency, said "These results show we are in with a chance to win the seat at the next General Election. It makes it even more interesting when you consider that these local elections were so affected by national issues and so we are not seeing the usual local election vote pattern. So if the votes reflected national opinion here in Northampton the Lib Dems would win."

The Lib Dems gained two seats from Labour but lost two seats to the Conservatives and now have 6 seats in the constituency to the Conservatives 4.

"Labour have been wiped out of Northampton North and Sally Keeble is clearly not going to hold the seat come the next election."

Notes to Editors

The figures used are for all 10 wards in the new Northampton North constituency.
