Following a question by Andrew Simpson at tonight's meeting of Northampton Borough Council it was confirmed by the Portfolioholder for the Environment, Cllr Trini Crake, that the Council had not only achieved the 10% carbon reduction required by the 10:10 campaign but was on course to exceed it by the end of 2010.
"This is really good news for Northampton" said Andrew Simpson, Lib Dem Parliamentary spokesperson and Borough Councillor for Kingsley ward. "The Lib Dem run council has shown its commitment to reducing carbon emmissions and helping to tackle climate change."
Cllr Simpson first proposed the Council adopt the 10:10 Campaign pledge back in December 2009. The pledge is for individuals and organisations to rereduce their carbon emmissions by at leats 10% during 2010. The Borough Council unanimously backed the move and various measures have been undertaken since then to help achieve the target. In 2010 the Council encouraged staff to switch off lights and unnecessary equipment when not in use, promoted car share and upgraded many of the lighting systems used in Borough premises.
"I think this achievement by the Borough Council should be congratulated" said Andrew "It shows they are on target to achieve a 35% reduction by 2012. It makes a real contrast with the Conservative run County Council who rejected a Lib Dem proposal to support the 10:10 campaign".
