Party President visits Northampton on key campaign stop12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 28th Apr 2010
Former business leader and local government expert, Baroness Ros Scott, visited Northampton on Saturday in a bid to attract new and first-time voters. Ros, who succeeded Simon Hughes as the party's President in 2008, dropped in to help Andrew and his team canvass in Abington Park before meeting with new party members and first-time supporters at Saffron Restaurant on Castilian Street. The visit is the fourth visit from a senior Lib Dem figure, after two visits by Leader Nick Clegg and one by Deputy Leader Vince Cable. Nationally and in Northampton, the party has seen a huge upswing in support since Nick Clegg's successes in the first two Leaders' debates, with first-time supporters coming forward to donate funds and join the party. Speaking at Saffron, Ros said:
"I'm really impressed with what Andrew and his team are doing in Northampton. "Both nationally in Northampton, more and more people are coming forward to get involved and help put an end to our rotten political system. "I'm particularly delighted to see that we are attracting new members from the University and from the town's long-established Bangladeshi community into the party. "It stands Andrew in very good stead with less than two weeks to go." ENDS
