Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Northampton North, Andrew Simpson, has announced he is backing Nick Clegg MP's campaign to become the next Leader of the Liberal Democrats.

"I worked closely with Nick when he was our local Euro MP and have always thought he had the talent and the vision to be a future leader of our party" said Andrew

"Nick is a real people person, with him what you see is what you get. He is just as comfortable holding a conversation with a local resident as he is addressing a large audience."

"He has helped local Lib Dems in Northampton on numerous occasions, not just when he was our MEP but since being an MP as well. His most recent visit was in the run up to the local elections in May when he came to support our campaign against cuts to Police numbers.

"Nick is a talented communicator and is just what the party needs to ensure that a distinctive liberal alternative is heard at a time when Labour and Conservative parties are often indistinguishable."

A number of prominent Northampton Liberal Democrat Councillors have also announced their backing for Nick including: Cllr Tony Woods, Cllr Richard Church, Cllr Trini Crake, Cllr Paul Varnsverry, Cllr Pam Varnsverry, Cllr Brian Markham, Cllr Irene Markham, Cllr Marianne Taylor, Cllr Roger Conroy, Cllr Jenny Conroy and Cllr Dennis Meredith.

Nick Clegg was MEP for the East Midlands from 1999 to 2004. When elected he was the first Parliamentarian in the area for the Liberal Democrats in over 70 years. During his time as our MEP he has been credited in helping grow the party in the area. He is currently the Honorary President of Northampton Liberal Democrats a position he has held for the last three years.

Ballot papers will be sent out to Northampton Lib Dem members from 17th November with the ballot closing on 15th December and the result being announced on 17th December.
