December 18, 2007 12:00 AM

Nick Clegg & Andrew SimpsonAndrew Simpson, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Northampton North has welcomed the election of Nick Clegg as the new Leader of the Party announced today.

"I have worked with Nick in the past when he was our local MEP for Northamptonshire and have always believed that he has a real talent, not only as a great communicator but as a real down to earth people person. He will be like a breath of fresh air in what has become a stale battle between the two old parties".

Nick Clegg was MEP for the East Midlands (covering Northamptonshire) between 1999-2004 he is currently Honorary President of Northampton Liberal Democrats. He has been a frequent visitor to Northampton and most recently came and supported Northampton candidates in the local election campaign earlier this year when the party won control of Northampton Borough Council for the first time.

"This is an exciting time to be a Liberal Democrat. continued Andrew. 'Gordon Brown's Government is blundering from one disaster to another. But the Conservatives' policy-lite PR agenda has failed to catch people's imagination. People are ready to hear what the Liberal Democrats have to offer.

"We have already planned our first newsletters featuring our new Leader. They will be going to residents shortly. And over the next few months, I will be taking a team of colleagues to call on local people and encourage them to support the party.

"The election of Nick Clegg has put wind in our sails and under his leadership, we are moving forward in Northampton"
