Scrapping of WNDC welcome but investment still needed says Lib Dem

October 14, 2010 9:00 PM

Andrew Greenfields DevelopmentLiberal Democrat Parliamentary spokesperson for Northampton North Constituency, Andrew Simpson has welcomed the news published today that the Coalition Government is to scrap the West Northants Development Corporation (WNDC) as one of the 192 Quangos being wound up.

"I and other Lib Dems campaigned against the creation of the WNDC back in 2003 and all along have said that its planning powers should have remained with the local councils. Now thankfully this is going to happen." said Andrew.

"Local people will once again decide what happens in their area and how our town grows will be down to what residents here want not Government bureaucrats and unelected officials".

The WNDC was set up in 2004. Northampton Liberal Democrats campaigned and voted against its creation but it was supported by local Conservative and Labour Councillors.

"Whilst the Government is clearly trying to improve local accountability by scrapping this Quango we need to make sure that Northampton Borough Council does get the funding needed to take back on the planning responsibilities. We also need to fight for the investment money WNDC was securing for improvements to our town." continued Andrew
