Pledge on Tuition Fees must be Honoured

October 13, 2010 9:00 PM

Andrew & Portia with tuition fees vanAndrew Simpson, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary spokesperson for Northampton North constituency, has today called on Lib Dem MP's to keep their promise to young people and families and vote against any plans for higher education that involving raising the cap on tuition fees.

"I like many Lib Dem candidates and elected MP's signed the pledge at the General Election against a rise in tuition fees" said Andrew

"Whilst I can accept we are not in a position to be able to scrap them our manifesto committed the party to phasing them out and we should be aiming to do just that. I hope Lib Dem MP's and our Leaders will recognise how important this issue is - not just to the future of our young people - but in restoring trust that politicians are true to their word."

"The Browne report is only a report and does not have to be implemented. Regardless of ways to mitigate against it how can it be right to give 18 year olds going to university next year up to £30,000 of debt."

"I am fully in support of the coalition and about working together in the national interest - but on tuition fees Lib Dems have to keep a promise to the people who voted for them."
