The Daventry District Council elections are being held in the shadow of the failure of the Conservative run County Council where a foolish policy of keeping the Council Tax too low for political advantage has contributed to the Council running out of money.
The result is that these could be the last elections for the District Council as the Government looks like imposing a new council on us which will see Daventry swallowed up in much larger 'unitary' Council including South Northants and Northampton. Daventry Lib Dems are concerned this will result in our area being overlooked in favour of the needs of Northampton.
"The Conservatives are to blame on both accounts - for the failure of the County Council and for the imposition by their Government of a larger, more distant unitary council on the local residents" said Lib Dem District Councillor, Catherine Lomax.
"There is a lesson here for when Daventry District Conservatives crow about keeping the Council Tax as one of the lowest in the country that is the same mistake they made on the County Council. It inevitably means less money in the long run to provide services".
"We have then seen massive council tax increases this year from the County Council and Conservative Police Commissioner as they try to catch up funding shortfalls. In Daventry the Conservatives have put the Daventry Town Special Expenses element of the Council Tax up by a massive 38%".
"Residents will find it hard to understand why their roads are crumbling, bus services and libraries being cut yet their District Council seems to have money spare to spend on a canal arm to nowhere".
"The ruling Conservatives need to be challenged".
"Daventry District Council desperately needs more opposition councillors to provide greater scrutiny, debate and challenge to the ruling Conservatives. We have seen what happens when one party rule goes unchecked with the failure of Northamptonshire County Council".
Liberal Democrats have set out our priorities for these elections and they are about focusing Daventry District Council on sorting out the basics: ensuring that with new developments comes funding for improved local services, getting a strong local development plan in place, spending no tax payers money on a canal arm, working towards a plastic free District and above all providing more challenge to the dominant Conservatives and ensuring the Council responds more to the needs of residents.
The Liberal Democrats are contesting all 13 Daventry District Council seats that are up for election (1 more than the Labour party).
